Iris are early summer flowers that come in a rainbow of colors. In fact, iris means rainbow. There are Dutch iris which grow from bulbs, as well as Japanese and Siberian varieties which are perennials cultivated from rhizomes. A common garden plant with sword-shaped blue-green leaves, the iris also grows wild in North America in damp woodsy places. The iris is said to bring a message of hope or sorrow.
